Abstract

Armed robbery has remained one of the most persistent security challenges confronting communities in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, with increasing incidents threatening lives, property, and socioeconomic activities. Despite various law enforcement interventions, robbery continues to thrive, suggesting the existence of underlying environmental and social conditions that facilitate criminal activities. This theoretical paper examined the dynamics of robbery in Wukari Local Government Area through the lens of Broken Windows Theory. Specifically, the paper sought to explain how physical disorder, weakened informal social control, poverty, youth unemployment, and the erosion of community cohesion contribute to the prevalence and persistence of robbery. Anchored on Broken Windows Theory as propounded by Wilson and Kelling, the paper argued that visible signs of neglect, environmental decay, and tolerance of minor forms of deviance create opportunities for more serious crimes such as armed robbery. Drawing on extant literature and documentary sources, the discussion revealed that deteriorating social and physical environments, coupled with ineffective community surveillance and inadequate policing, have reinforced criminal tendencies in the area. The paper concluded that robbery in Wukari is not merely a product of individual criminal disposition but also a manifestation of broader social disorganization and environmental neglect. It recommended the strengthening of community policing initiatives, improvement of urban infrastructure, prompt response to minor disorders, youth empowerment programmes, and enhanced collaboration between security agencies and local communities as essential measures for reducing robbery and promoting sustainable security in Wukari Local Government Area.
